My wife is pursuing an online undergraduate degree, part of the requirements are to comment on other's papers and to defend her premises of her papers. We, almost immediately, recognized that other students comments were written with assistance of, completely by AI. More than a little disappointed at this use is allowed. Since becoming familiar with AI written script, I now find it everywhere, especially in "how to", "here's why" or "product review" webpages. A little disgusting...

Keep up the good work, Seth!!

I really don’t know how college kids are expected not to cheat with AI. It saves SO MANY hours of work… it’s natural to expect they’d cut the corners.

First I would like to say Trump and his lack of cheese was hilarious. I used Gemini fir the 1st time last week I have never used Ai before. What I found disturbing about it was it only knows what has been uploaded into it it does not know both sides of a narrative it cannot access the internet and it can't draw if it does its not correct and looks strange. I asked it if the Covid Vaccines were safe it said yes with data to back it up but that is not correct I copied information to it with the opposite view but I found out it does not retain that info. Gemini is a Democrat 😁 how is this a good thing not having all information good and bad?

Thank you Captain K. I agree with you about AI. I think it has its place as an information resource but think it's a tool for those too lazy to write/draw for themselves. It would seem those in the legacy media must use it because they all use the same tired words/phrases. You read one, you've read them all. Thank you for your authenticity. Keep up the great work!

You should scold your A.I. for letting this typo (in the fourth paragraph) get through: "I hope tfhis also help..."

I do copy editing as a hobby for D. Ward Cornell (who has sold a LOT more hard science fiction novels on Amazon than I ever will). I will be the first to admit I don't catch everything, but I do my best, and he's told me he appreciates the work I do to help his novels be the best they can be.

As for me, I'm not consistent enough in drafting articles to consider working on Substack myself, so I just stick with X. I'm also not interested in trying to make a living selling any of my creative work, as the market has made clear it's not interested in anything I have to say. Oh well.

Just sayin'.

I don’t think that slip was Grok. I think it was a paste issue from Word to Substack. Happened yesterday too.

As for monetizing - I’m glad my journal sold. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to commit full time to this fight. Speaking events aren’t as frequent or lucrative as some think.

Soon it will be God given humans being pushed outta jobs and the planet due to AI/BS IMO... Humans will at some point give up thinking, creating etc ..and become lazy(ier), let the robot figure it out, Aye yi Yi...me don't like so much this technology.. I've seen how it's already stolen an election and manipulated large vessels to crash .. by "taking control over"... NO Bueno .. we need to figure this out quickly.. I know the Tech CEO'$ are loving the Hugh cash they are making... But ...

How quickly these A.I. tools have emerged! My 27 year old daughter, a computer engineer was just saying the same today about current engineering students are now using AI to write code so they won’t be really learning coding. Much changed

in 5 years.

Just wanted to pop in and say I have to agree - If you have to use AI to write a paper, or write in general, you really can't write. While AI writing might have advantages, (right now I see none) I personally think it's cheating and I will never use AI in my writing. I guess that's why I put out at such a snail's pace. Sigh...

My vision must be going because every time I see AI, I read it as A1- like in the steak sauce! 😂 I worry about the kids in school. It seems that so many of them are behind due to Covid and they just keep moving them along. Now let’s just use A.I….

Thanks again Seth. You have drawn attention to a problem at the same time you demonstrate a part of the solution…we must rely on our God given wits and work with our own two hands.

You really got me with your “screen time” comment…I am praying for the day when my smartphone goes into the Raccoon River and I can devote the rest of my life to person-to-person contacts.

Who needs AI when you’re blessed with the real thing? We can’t uninvent the wheel but we don’t have to roll down the road to perdition.

I think there’s a paste issue between Word and the Substack draft page. Had one yesterday that spelled 1996 as p96 and Grok didn’t see that, and I wouldn’t have typed that.

There has been a large problem with spelling on many different sites and articles for the last few months, at least. It seems to be rampant lately. It is by no means just on Substack. I've started thinking that many writers are using A.I. to write for them, or using a voice transcribing system and not proof reading it.

I have almost no doubt the purple check Trump haters feeding the raving masses use it exclusively. Look at the WI cheese example in this article.

I just do not understand the mindset of those who use AI to write.

Writing, for someone who is above basic literacy, is not that hard. And, like many skills, the quality of the output improves with practice.

Writing is the FUN part of online communication. Editing is less exciting, yet, for those of us who are at least proficient in writing, a worthwhile activity that takes our writing to the next level.

Yet, I don't condemn those who need some assistance with editing. I do pay attention to the cautions my word processing software flags in my written work. I may not change it (at least as the program suggests), but I do stop and weigh the proposed changes.

However, I almost always ignore the flags that pop up against my pronounced Great Lakes dialect. I am Lake Erie born and raised, and, yes, I DO end some sentences with a preposition.

That's just one of the regionalisms embedded in the Great Lakes dialect.

A great deal of my writing is designed to bring forth the distinct flavor of my heritage. In a sense, my ancestors - Great Lakes, Irish immigrant, West-by-God Virginia, the tri-state "Yinzer" dialect - https://www.pghcitypaper.com/specials-guides/pittsburghese-dictionary-how-to-translate-the-yinzer-vocabulary-14838287 - and the Low Country accent I encountered when teaching in South Carolina.

Those sounds still live in my head.

As does the speech of the neighbors of my youth - KY, TN, and the parents of my best friend - one from the north of England, the other from Ireland. I can clearly distinguish the upper class British from the Cockneys, which makes it hard to listen to those American actors who just don't hear the distinction.

But AI would steamroll my efforts to bring those sounds to life.

Nope, if grammar checkers want to 'ret up' my writing, I'll take a look at their suggestions. But, I am the final decision maker.

AI is a fantastic tool. Like any tool, it can be misused. And abused. People using AI to ask about current political issues is like using an air wench as a paperweight. AI excels at helping with tasks that require tedious research like computer programming. I'm currently using it to create a mobile game as a way of learning the C# language. Ask it about your hobbies rather than your pet "comspiracy theory" and you will unlock a patient knowledgeable fun compadre. Not as good as your favorite human but always available. ;-)
