The "middle" is not defined by ideology. The "middle" isn't really the middle in that sense, and never has been. The "middle" is how much money do they have in the bank. How much food they have in the fridge. The "middle" is what-have-you-done-for-me-lately. The "middle" is literally the 'are you better off now than you were four years ago' crowd. And they can't see past that, or don't care to. If they did, they'd be on the right.
